ShtickCity

West Campus, just before it became a different neighborhood.

You are a UT student with one Friday afternoon to cause trouble, avoid getting drafted for Shabbat dinner, and make it home before 7:21 PM. The old towers still dominate the skyline. The low-rise apartments, co-ops, parking lots and porches still fill the blocks below them. Facebook News Feed is three days old. No. 1 Ohio State comes to town tomorrow.

The trailer · 46 seconds of real gameplay
This exact weekendFacebook launched News Feed Tuesday. Texas plays Ohio State Saturday. You have Friday.
A whole neighborhood

Roughly 21st to 29th, from the Drag west to Leon, rebuilt as a playable 2006 place.

The skyline

Dobie, the Castilian and University Towers already loom over much lower blocks.

The Friday clock

The afternoon keeps moving. Hillel fills up, porch life wakes up, and sundown does not negotiate.

Go inside

Hillel, co-ops, the Union, bathrooms, the AEPi temp house and its basement.

Get distracted

AIM, a flip phone, an iPod mini, Snake, beer pong, bathroom lore and a moped.

The map

West Campus before the canyon.

The recognizable towers are already there. Most of the neighborhood around them is still smaller, looser and stranger: two-story rentals, old apartments, co-ops, surface lots, mature trees and yards that later development erased.

What you actually do

A mission can survive getting sidetracked.

The prank list gives the afternoon direction. The neighborhood keeps trying to become the game instead.

Cause the trouble

Hillel and the local kollel still supply the central jobs, with physical mini-games and consequences that change how the rest of the afternoon plays.

Wander off

Some of the best material lives outside the objective list. Explore buildings, bathrooms and social pockets that have their own small systems and jokes.

AEPi temp houseBeer pong upstairs; couch, smoke and an improvising guitar guy downstairs.
Bathroom fieldworkEvery bathroom can produce the Coiler. You still have to find the right stall.

The interiors

The doors now lead somewhere.

The world is meant to work at street level. Enter Hillel, duck into a co-op, go downstairs at the Union, use a fraternity bathroom, or disappear into the AEPi basement and forget what you were doing.

September 2006

No nostalgia filter.

The period detail is part of the play: AIM away messages, multi-tap texting, an iPod mini, Nokia Snake, early Facebook grammar, printouts, flyers and a campus reacting to News Feed in real time.

Your Friday. Austin candle lighting is 7:21 PM.

No. 1 Ohio State meets No. 2 Texas at DKR.

ACL begins at Zilker. The next Austin weekend is already arriving.

What is real

Accuracy where memory notices.

Shtick City uses historical anchors without pretending every anonymous apartment wall is an archival reconstruction.

Named places carry weight

Real landmarks are placed to their historical address or a strong firsthand anchor: Dobie, Castilian, University Towers, Texas Hillel, 21st Street Co-op, Women’s Federation and the other named pieces of the map.

Supporting low-rise buildings reproduce the scale and fabric of 2006 West Campus when the exact predecessor parcel is uncertain.

The trouble is fictional

The streets, period, skyline, game-week atmosphere and much of the neighborhood texture are grounded in Austin. Characters and schemes are invented or transformed for the game.

The point is a place specific enough that somebody who was there can argue with it.
